The
site was originally intended to serve as a pictorial documentation
of the Berlin art scene, focussing exclusively on portraits
of Berlin artists. Any monotony or rigidity of form was meant
to be intercepted and broken by a series of cat photos (hence
the name catonbed i.e. cat on bed).
The original concept had to be altered
for reasons of practicability. Besides being visited in their
studios, artists were now photographed at exhibitions and at
other cultural events. The additional material made for a high
volume of photos and it became necessary to adjust the format
for internet usability. My various photographs were now categorized
in rigid listings assorted by place (galleries in East and West,
Museums etc.)
At present, apart from the documentation of Berlin artist and
other people involved in the art world, the emphasis is on galleries
and other art institutions and projects.
I am hardly interested in judgements about the value of art
or opinions on whether the work that is presented here is to
be regarded as art or not. What does interest me is showing
the amazing variety and the strong impulse of artistic statements
in the city of Berlin.
This aspect could lead to the project being referred to in the
future for documentary purposes.
